Social Responsibility

Tea Industry is a labour intensive industry and the workforce mostly constitutes workers who have no basic education. Our tea gardens are located in remote rural areas that do not have many alternative local employment opportunities. A major part of our workforce live on the estates with their families and therefore the total population residing and directly dependent on the tea estates is quite large. The Company maintains cordial relationship with its workforce. The Company feels that efficient human resource management is the key to survival and success of the company

The Company follows the social welfare laws enacted for tea plantation workers in India, which are most stringent in the world. The said laws though instrumental for hiking the cost of production, has contributed to a system which is in line with best employment practices.

We provide for adequate welfare and recreational facilities for our employees and take pride ourselves in maintaining clubs and sporting sites for all our company's employees to use.

We also comply with the legal requirement to provide blankets and protective clothing (like apron, shoes and umbrellas) and regularly issue new items out.

We also maintain crèches for children of our workers. Toys, Sports materials and free food are provided at the crèche.

School till class 10 is run by the Assam Government on land donated by the Company for the children of workers and local population.

Our central Hospitals contain state-of-the-art facilities and employ committed staff and are run by very senior doctors. We maintain these to the highest standards to carter to the health needs of our workforce. National Rural Health Mission scheme has also been implemented at our tea estate hospitals. Local people residing in the garden area are provided free treatment. We also organize awareness camp to check the spread of diseases like gastroenteritis, Japanese Elephantitis, malaria, etc.

Every employee working in our tea estates has the right to form and join a Trade Union. We have excellent relations with the unions and the labour work-force, which is substantiated by the fact that we have had no labour unrest in our tea estates.

We have a dedicated gas pipe line of our own for supply of natural gas from GAIL (India) Limited. This has resulted in conservation of the environment by minimizing the usage of fossil fuels.
